Hello and Welcome to Skool Beanz Gardening Club
Skool Beanz started in June 2019 at Chilthorne Domer Church Primary School as an after school gardening club every Friday run by Lara who lives in Thorne. Lara had just completed a Diploma in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture at Coventry University, this is the process of using plants and gardens to improve physical and mental health, as well as communication and thinking skills.
Inspired by the climate activist Greta Thunberg and young people today bravely speaking up for our planet and raising awareness at campaigns such as the 'Friday's For Future' school strikes around the world, Lara wanted to do something. After feeling helpless in these current unsettling environmental and political times, she wanted to create a project that supports her community and the children and nature who live in it. Children are the future and nature needs our help. Thus Skool Beanz was created, with the assistance of some little gardeners.
Since Skool Beanz began it is clear that the children love being outside amongst nature, getting their hands dirty. We have had so much fun. Some of the activities we have enjoyed include... growing, picking and eating veg, sowing seeds, watering (with plenty of water fights!) finding and examining insects, bulb planting and planting colourful plants around the school, writing labels, collecting seed and making seed packets, creating lavender bags and twig stars for the school Christmas market, and apple juice making to name but a few.
The past year of numerous lockdowns has been so difficult, but we look forward to all the gardening days ahead at school and on the new school allotment plot in the village.
